The Common-Wealth of Oceana

By: James Harrington

Price: $9,500.00

Quantity: 1 available

Rebacked mid-nineteenth century in morocco leaving boards in their original distressed (though sturdy) calf (see image). Queer (but continuous) collation follows: [xii], 239, [blank], 255–286,189-[211] [blank]. Occasional scolia in a light pen; general browning of the text; fore-edge corners bumped; general wear to boards. Nonetheless a handsome copy. ; Harrington's economic basis for government had a profound effect on the framers of the constitution. A copy of the Commonwealth was bought by Thomas Jefferson prior to his departure for France. Kevin Hayes (The Road to Monticello) calls it the most important book Jefferson bought from the famous Byrd library for the formation of his political thought.
